A Peace and Security, Awareness and Gender Mainstreaming 2-days workshop was previously held at the Mendana Hotel in Honiara.
The workshop was purposely organized for the Guadalcanal Provincial Government officials, women, and men from selected Guadalcanal province communities.
It aims to increase awareness on the roles of women in peace and security to ensure that women’s peace and security issues are addressed and to inform community members and provincial government officials about women in peace and security to advance advocacy efforts.
During the ethnic tension period, women experienced human rights violations including gender-based violence, displacement and lack of access to basic services. Even though women played their roles as peacemakers and mediators, they were still excluded from the formal peace process.
Guadalcanal women’s desk officer, Helen Joy said that she is very happy for this workshop as someone responsible to look after Guadalcanal women to thank the organizers for this very important workshop.
“Gender mainstreaming is one of the outcomes of the objective of the Guadalcanal women’s province policy and it is a good sign to see us coming together to share our ideas to make sure that women, peace and security issues are addressed,” Helen said.
The workshop is organized through the joint UN Women and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) United Nations Peace Building Fund (UNPBF) project and is facilitated by the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs (MWYCFA) and UN Women representatives.
