AUSTRALIAN High Commissioner Dr. Lachlan Strahan stressed the vital role local women have achieved on the social, economic, cultural and political levels in the Solomon Islands.

Dr. Lachlan expressed the sentiment during the International women’s day (IWD) combined celebratory event held on the 9th of March at the Honiara City Council (HCC) compound.

He admirably acknowledged the vital roles local women have played for generations as true producers, managers of resources, home keepers and child bearers and as child educators.

“I want to sincerely acknowledge the current women leaders in the country, which include the three women Ministers in the parliament, four Permanent Secretaries including women serving as Judges and Magistrates.

“Over time, we have seen significant changes in the roles women played in society; women have extended and today more and more Solomon Island women are stepping forward into a wide range of roles taking up roles in education and business, sport, Journalism, medicine, police, fire rescuers and the correctional services,” Dr. Lachlan added.

The International Women’s Day celebrations was organized by the HCC Youth Sports and Women Division and its organizing committee which includes the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs (MWYCFA), Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), Correctional Service Solomon Islands (CSSI), Women’s Rights Action Movement (WRAM), World Vision, Oxfam, Seif Ples, Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI), Young Women Parliamentary Group (YWPG), World Fish, Solomon Water, and the HCC Women’s development department.
