Miss Social Media Highlight Domestic Violence

Fourth runner-up of the 2017 Miss Solomon Islands Pageant Contest, Grime Ezra.

WINNER of the double special awards at the recent 2017 Miss Solomon Islands Pageant Contest, Grime Ezra said her overall intention to join this year competition was to bring to attention to the scourge of violence against women plaguing the country.

The 19 year-old registered her entry at this year’s pageant contest as Miss Malaita and have successfully scooped two special awards – Miss Photogenic Award and Miss Social Media Award at the crowning night held at the Coral Seas Resort and Casino in Honiara.

“My strongest desire to enter the pageant competition was to speak out on the relevant issues of domestic violence against women. The alarming trend of violence within families and households is very high in the country.

“It is wide spread, deeply practised and has a serious impacts on women’s health and well-being,” she told Solomon Women.

Grime is part Malaita and Guadalcanal province and is currently doing her studies at University of South Pacific, Honiara Campus.

“In my community, I have witnessed women being physical assaulted in their homes at the hands of their husbands and I strongly believe that respective communities in the country can play a vital role in addressing this issue,” she said.

The theme of this year’s annual pageant competition is ‘Women in Peace and Harmony with society’.

She described the theme of this year’s Miss Solomon Islands Pageant as very fitting in terms of making changes, building peace and harmony in our communities.

“Women are the back bone of our community. They are very creative, caring, loving and have potentials to create peace and a positive changes in our homes; women can take responsibilities to make it happen.

“They have the potential to raise issues that are vital for peace. Like men, women play a variety of roles during conflict, from peacemakers and to influencers of change. Therefore, we need to set good examples so that our lives can become a channel of blessing for men to see,” she added.

Grime Ezra recently won the fourth runner-up category of the 2017 Miss Solomon Islands Pageant Contest.
