HOUSE of Tea is among the small struggling businesses in Honiara to slam Government plans that could see a temporary ban on Facebook in the Solomon Islands.
In a recent exclusive interview with Solomon Women Newspaper, the owner of the House of Tea – cake business, Sandra Nonipitu said the proposed ban would have a ‘disproportionately impact’ on small businesses that make up the majority of the informal sector.
“The proposed ban would stop me from advertising and promoting my cake business services and delivery to my customers on the online platform such as Facebook.
“Facebook has played a big part in my cake business. Since I created my business page on Facebook a few months ago, there has been a steady increase in the number of customers and regular cake orders per week.
“This Facebook temporary ban will affect my business when it comes into action. Thus, my fear is it will heavily affect my business profit earnings,” Sandra said.
The Cabinet has recently agreed to ban the world’s biggest social networking site, Facebook, in the Solomon Islands. The temporary measure for the ban on Facebook was brought to Cabinet by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare and Communication and Civil Aviation Minister Peter Shanel Agovaka.
Sandra, who started her cake business in 2017 said despite the proposed idea to ban Facebook, she will now need to explore other options to maintain contact with her customers i.e. to explore other existing social media platforms or revert to the conventional form of mobile phone network communications.
Her home-based business is located in East Kola Ridge, East Honiara. Sandra makes a good variety of cakes and could be called on 7556930 or House of Tea via Facebook to place an order.
All cakes by Sandra’s are made especially to order on an individual basis and for specific cake prices based on individual requests. She can also provide for all sorts of requests regarding shapes, sizes, and flavors, and fillings of cake and each order may have an individual price.
She offers delivery service with all the cakes to anywhere in Honiara.
