THE country will mark the 2020 International Day of the Girl (IDG)in Honiara, according to the Plan International Solomon Islands, Country Manager, Ela Kauhue in a Press Conference yesterday.

The International Day of the Girl is an annual event that falls on the 11th of October but will be celebrated on an earlier date on the 9th of October in Honiara.

The upcoming event will be marked for the first time in the country. The theme for this year is ‘Freedom Online’ which addresses the importance of online safety for girls.

Mrs. Kauhue said that the International Day of the Girl focuses on the attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and to fulfill human rights.

“The focus of the day is on highlighting the harassment and abuse girls and young women face on social media causing it to silence girl’s voices which also is a barrier to their leadership,” Mrs. Kauhue said.

She also included that the day will also focus more on the COVID 19 situation as it will be worse for girls as we all go through the experience.

Mrs. Kauhue said that in a recent research 14,000 girls in 22 countries across the world have been harassed and abused on social media.

She said that the research findings show that online violence is serious causing real harm and silencing girls’ voices during this pandemic.
